Want To Be A Successful Mompreneur? Here's The Secret ...

So you've decided to do a mompreneur gig and now you're wondering how to be successful. First and foremost, congrats! Deciding and starting are two of the most important steps! Here's the secret sauce to success, what you need to do so you can be like those moms that you read about, so you can earn a decent if not amazing income with your business - WORK IT! Truly, that is what it takes. Whether you are doing a direct sales, MLM, network marketing, editing, writing, baby sitting, jewelry making, whatever-you're-interested-in-business, you truly have to work it consistently for a few years.

For many mompreneurs, finding the time to work can be the hardest part because when we're moms, everyone else gets our attention and our priorities firmly lie with the kids. So how can we work our business, have the flexibility to be with our families, tend to our husbands and friends, keep track of the household, have time for our own self care, and run a business? Three simple, but not always easy ways:

1. Schedule your hours of operation one day at the beginning of the week, every single week. When I started my business, Sunday afternoons were good for that because my husband was home so I had help with the kids. Your hours of operation should be nonnegotiable just like any job you are paid for. Why would you work harder for someone else than yourself, so treat your business like a business and remember that you are the CEO. At the end of every week, be honest with yourself on if you would rehire yourself or fire yourself and then adjust your hours, expectations and commitment the following week.

2. Involve your kids and family. Get buy-in from them, explain what's in it for them when you succeed, and show them how they can help. If your kids are old enough to talk, no matter how young they are, share with them what you are doing and why you are doing it. They can be involved by being quiet when you're on a call or sending a message. Then reward them by having a park outing or some other thing that is special. Older kids can be much more involved, will get a great entrepreneurial education as well, and could even earn a paycheck.

3. Eat that frog! Do what you hate most first, every single day. One of my favorite books that I read when I started my business is called Eat That Frog and helps with long- and short-term planning and goal setting. It also lays out why tackling your dreaded tasks first thing every day will change your life and business. It is a super easy, short read, so for you busy moms, it's just what you need.

If you're still skeptical on if you have what it takes, know that successful entrepreneurs are willing to get uncomfortable every single day and work their businesses. It's not about putting in 80 hours a week for a few weeks. It's about consistently showing up for at least 15+ hours a week for a few years. If anyone tells you different, they are not painting a realistic picture. So ask yourself, is being uncomfortable for a few hours a week worth living your dream life? My answer was yes, each and every day, and thank goodness it was!

Hey, Mom! Has Anyone Told You You're Doing A Great Job?

I was recently traveling alone with my three kids, and since they're tween/teens, this does not seem like such a Herculean effort as it did a few years ago. As we were exiting the shuttle from the rental car place to the airport, a guy looked at me and said "Hey, Mom! Has anyone told you lately you're doing a great job?" My face lit up, I felt a huge glow inside and thanked him profusely. He may as well have told me I had won the lottery.😁 This got me to thinking, why was this such a big deal? Probably for the one truth that most moms I know live. We think we suck at this parenting thing every single day. We beat ourselves up for every little thing. We read social media and play the compare game. We are not enough insert whatever crapola thing comes to our mind or is hot in the media at any given moment. And here's what the truth looks like. Most of us are doing a pretty amazing job. Our kids are loved, fed, clothed and housed. They feel secure enough to ha...

Creative And Stuck Behind A Desk? Time To Break Free!

Are you a creative type looking for more than the corporate grind? You know you have the ideas, but do you have what it takes to break free? Lisa Gutierrez Martinez often asked herself those questions, and she even asked her friends, some of whom basically told her that her business idea was crazy. Luckily for her and many people who have benefitted from her culturally impactful, creative and stylish dinner parties, she didn't listen. Lisa has worked successfully in various corporate positions, liking some, not loving some, and throughout them all envisioning other ways she could be professionally challenged and fulfilled as an entrepreneur. Having her own business was even more of a calling for her when her son was born. Until he was around one, she stayed with her job and had limited flexibility, but she still had to be away from him for 8 to 9 hours a day and knew it was time for a change so started her "side hustle." Like many entrepreneurial-minded people, Lis...

Do You Think All Bricks And Mortar Businesses Are Dead? Think Again!

We hear it over and over again - bricks and mortar stores are dying. Don't start a retail store because everyone is shopping on line. Recently I met a mompreneur who would beg to differ. Megan Giltner, a self-proclaimed professional bra fitter and accidental entrepreneur, became the owner of a lingerie boutique a few years ago and says the business is thriving. Like many of us moms who pursue entrepreneurship, Megan always knew that being a mom was something important to her, and at the same time she needed to feel professionally productive and engaged. She had been working in lingerie for several years, initially as a part-time way to earn some extra spending money. When Megan was four months pregnant, the owner offered her the opportunity to purchase the business where she was working, and although timing may not have seemed ideal, she jumped in with both feet and has not regretted her decision. What Megan loves most about entrepreneurship is the ability to do something sh...
