Do You Want More Out Of Life? Go For It!

So you have these admirable degrees, this fantastic job, and this amazing son, but you want more. Should you want more? Is that even fair? Shouldn’t you be happy with what you have? But maybe there’s more out there for you. And then something happens. Your goddaughters want a tutu, and you make them the cutest ones ever, and you embroider shirts, customized especially for those sweet girls. Other people start to want embroidered items for their children, and you find yourself as a mom who works full time who stumbled upon an amazing business. And your name is Shatara Weaver, and you think that you never would have imagined your life where it is, but here you are, and it’s pretty amazing!

You may wonder why I used the pronoun “you” in the above paragraph, and it’s because although this is Shatara’s story, it is not hers alone. There are so many of you moms out there who have incredible degrees, work histories, and experience who may be looking for something more, who may have some creative side left untapped, who have that something that could give you the money you need and the time flexibility you crave to be the mother that you want to be. Shatara exemplifies all of that in a nutshell. And when she created the gorgeous tutus for her goddaughters, she kept moving forward, thinking of the possibilities of what her life could be if she started her own business.

At the time of GodMama Wear, LLC’s inception, Shatara’s son was one and she was working full
time. She did not have entrepreneurship on her mind, but she wanted a special Christmas gift for her goddaughters, so she made beautiful tutus for them. Friends saw her work and asked if she could make them tutus and then others asked if she could embroider logos on t-shirts and other items, and Shatara found herself with a business. For a few years, she continued both her full-time position and GodMama Wear, fitting her business in the nooks and crannies of her life whenever she could. Ultimately she left her corporate position earlier this year, and although it was not an easy decision, she has never looked back because she now has the time flexibility to be with her son when she wants to.

Another huge benefit of entrepreneurship for Shatara is that her business allows her to support causes that align with her passion.  As a woman engineer, Shatara has seen first hand the large gender gap in STEM. So she started GodMama Cares and donates a portion of GodMama Wear’s sales to women-led nonprofits that support women and girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  An engineer at heart, Shatara loves solving problems, and both her for- and non-profits do just that!

Time Outs For Mom? Yes, Please!

We talk a lot about giving our kids time outs, but have you remembered yourself? Are you giving yourself time outs from all of the mommy-, home-, and professional-life duties? When my kids were little, some times even 30 minutes of not being needed helped me feel so refreshed! And guess what happens when we feel refreshed? We are better moms, wives, and friends and feel whole again - like maybe we can do this mom thing and aren't such a failure after all. So what are some great things to do to take care of you, to make you feel like yourself? 1. Work out. This doesn't have to mean going to the gym every day or spending hours on machines and weights. This can be something as simple and free as grabbing another mom friend, putting your kids in a baby carrier and/or stroller, and going for a walk or run. You could find a gym that has baby sitting services. When my kids were little, I found a Jazzercise class where I babysat once a week so got my membership comped. There a

Do You Think All Bricks And Mortar Businesses Are Dead? Think Again!

We hear it over and over again - bricks and mortar stores are dying. Don't start a retail store because everyone is shopping on line. Recently I met a mompreneur who would beg to differ. Megan Giltner, a self-proclaimed professional bra fitter and accidental entrepreneur, became the owner of a lingerie boutique a few years ago and says the business is thriving. Like many of us moms who pursue entrepreneurship, Megan always knew that being a mom was something important to her, and at the same time she needed to feel professionally productive and engaged. She had been working in lingerie for several years, initially as a part-time way to earn some extra spending money. When Megan was four months pregnant, the owner offered her the opportunity to purchase the business where she was working, and although timing may not have seemed ideal, she jumped in with both feet and has not regretted her decision. What Megan loves most about entrepreneurship is the ability to do something sh

Hey, Mom! Has Anyone Told You You're Doing A Great Job?

I was recently traveling alone with my three kids, and since they're tween/teens, this does not seem like such a Herculean effort as it did a few years ago. As we were exiting the shuttle from the rental car place to the airport, a guy looked at me and said "Hey, Mom! Has anyone told you lately you're doing a great job?" My face lit up, I felt a huge glow inside and thanked him profusely. He may as well have told me I had won the lottery.😁 This got me to thinking, why was this such a big deal? Probably for the one truth that most moms I know live. We think we suck at this parenting thing every single day. We beat ourselves up for every little thing. We read social media and play the compare game. We are not enough insert whatever crapola thing comes to our mind or is hot in the media at any given moment. And here's what the truth looks like. Most of us are doing a pretty amazing job. Our kids are loved, fed, clothed and housed. They feel secure enough to ha
